How to Allow Microphone Access on iPhone Safari
Enable microphone access in Safari on iPhone and iPad so browser voice games can record: the permission prompt, Settings → Safari → Microphone, and common iOS gotchas.
Updated · 2 min read
Safari on iPhone and iPad supports microphone recording on web pages since iOS 14.3. The permission flow has a few iOS-specific twists; here's the complete path.
The first-time prompt
Press Start dubbing in the game. Safari shows "[this site]" Would Like to Access the Microphone. Tap Allow.
Safari asks per site and, by default, remembers the choice only for the current visit. If it asks again next time, that's normal; you can make it permanent (below).
If you tapped Don't Allow
- Tap the AA (or page settings) icon at the left of the address bar.
- Tap Website Settings.
- Set Microphone to Allow (or Ask).
- Reload the page.
Making the choice permanent
Settings → Safari → scroll to Settings for Websites → Microphone → choose Allow for the site, or set the default to Ask so you always get a prompt.
If Safari has no microphone access at all
Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → make sure Safari (or Safari Websites) is switched on. If Safari isn't listed, no website has requested the mic yet; try pressing Start in the game first.
Common iOS gotchas
- In-app browsers. Opening the link from Instagram, TikTok or Discord uses a restricted browser. Tap ⋯ → Open in Safari.
- Silent takes. If your recordings play back with no sound, another app (voice memo, call) may still hold the microphone. Close it and reload.
- Ringer/volume. The reference voice and playback follow the media volume, not the ringer switch, but a very low volume can make the game seem broken.
- Older iOS. Versions before 14.3 cannot record audio in Safari. Update iOS.
- Lock screen. Locking the phone mid-scene stops the recording. Keep the screen awake for the round.
Chrome on iPhone
Chrome on iOS uses Safari's engine, and the same Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone toggle applies, under Chrome instead of Safari. The in-page prompt works the same way.
